.img files showing up in my folders

I have a real simple question.

First of all, I have a folder with about 400 product images.

For some reason, I have duplicates of each one of these images, but with a .img added to the beginning of the file name.

For instance, image 228504PAW-Mfall2008.jpg has an exact duplicate named
.img.228504PAW-Mfall2008.jpg .

Any ideas? Can i delete them?

The .img files contain information about how ShopSite should display the image on your store pages. They are necessary for your store to function properly so you should not delete them.
