shipping calculations, shipping from more than one location

Postby garymill234 » Fri Jun 15, 2007 6:36 pm

I do much drop shipping with my business, and mainly use one supplier for that, and use ups to determine costs. I would like to begin to ship items from my own location too or even other ones, but need a way to calculate shipping costs for the customer. Most items I sell are valued at just a few dollars so an order can be made up of many items of varying weights so ups is really the best way to calculate freight, but need to be able to do it on an order that could be coming from a few different points to a customer.

I have heard that with shop site's shipping api, a custom one could be created to handle something like this, has anyone gone this route already, would anyone in the shopsite community background in this be interested in discussing this further in terms of creating this for me.

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,

It is definitely possible. According to the ShopSite Shipping API specifications, ShopSite passes the line items that are ordered to the shipping API.

You could just use a custom product field to pass a manufacturer zip code, then have the API tally all the products with each zip code and retrieve shipping quotes individually, then total them up together and return to ShopSite.

If you could get your hands on the code of the Shipping API that you wanted to use, the changes wouldn't be too substantial. However, if you needed to rewrite it from scratch it would get pretty extensive.

Who were you thinking of using as a shipper (FedEx, UPS, etc)?

Thanks for the reply!

I would want to do shipping just with UPS.

Because ShopSite has built-in support for UPS, that may take a little more because the add-on would have to be written from scratch, unless ShopSite created the module for you with their existing code (not sure they even would - but it wouldn't hurt to ask).

If not, if you could find a few other merchants who need such functionality, you could maybe split the development costs so it's more affordable.

This sounds like a great idea!

Would anyone else be interested in this module, sharing costs?
