Limiting amount of text displayed

I'm creating a custom search results template and want to extract the first hundred characters of the More Information Text. Anyone know how I might be able to do this?

Have you set the
"Maximum number of characters displayed for the product description:"
field on the search configuration screen? (Preferences > Search Settings for a manager store or Preferences > Search Settings > Search Layout for Pro)

I knew I had seen something like that somwhere but couldn't remember where.
Is this limiting the Product Description or the More Information Description or whichever I decide to use in my template.

I think it only works on product descriptions but I'm not sure.

Yes I tink you're right. I just tested my template and it did not shorten the MI Text.
