Hazmat Fees and Surcharges

Postby Mark » Wed Dec 27, 2006 3:13 pm

Is it possible to write a surcharge script that would work as follows:

If any (in any amount or all) of 8 different SKU's are ordered and the order is shipping ground add $20.00. If the order is shipping air add $30.00.

I am not sure if this is something that can be done with the surcharge or not but we need something to handle Hazmat fees for compressed gas that we sell.

Thanks for your help.

The only way to automate this and make it work would be with a custom shipping API script that would return all the shipping rates. The script could checks SKUs and return custom rates for the specific hazmat products accordingly.

Out of the box, you could use a simple shipping by weight table and have the weight of the hazmat products be higher than the rest to cause a higher shipping rate for these products.

You can add a per product extra handling charge for the hazmat products, but this can only be one extra charge that would apply to all shipping options. Maybe average it out and try to re-coup the cost somewhere else.

A surcharge in ShopSite is a shopper selected option from a dropdown menu. It is not automated, and cannot be based on which shipping option is selected.

Thanks for the info. Its not what I wanted to hear but we will have to press on.

I have yet to find a shopping cart that handled hazmat fees without major modifications. I guess there is no demand for it.
