How would I add a drop down menu with a color set

Postby TheDigitalMan » Wed Nov 22, 2006 4:35 am

I have items that come in multiple sizes. I have created a MASTER product record which contains a thumbnail and a more information page etc. I have created additional product records for each size. I show the thumbnail and the various sizes below it with an add to cart button beside each one. This works well. (Although I might want to change the size selection to a drop down menu at some point)

Each of these products also comes in many colors. But here is the twist. They have more than one color associated with them. Example: Main color BEIGE with DARK BROWN trim. (2 Colors). But some products have 3 Colors and even up to 7 Colors associated with them. The number of colors associated with any given product is static. It will never change. That value could be stored in the PRODUCT SKU record.

What I want to do is when the customer clicks on the size product they want to buy. BEFORE taking them to the shopping cart I want them to go to an in between page and have it display x number of drop down menus. One drop down menu for each color that product has associated with it. These colors can simply be numbered. ie. Color 1: Drop down list. Color 2: Drop down list.

The drop down list of colors can even be the same for each Color Number.

How difficult will this be? Can someone point me in the right direction?

Thanks in advance.

Have you tried the Product Ordering options fields shown when adding a new product or on the Edit Product Layout screen? The first one you use to enter a description of the options and the second one you build a list of options for the pulldowns by entering each option on a separate line. If you want multiple pulldowns you just add a blank line between the items such as shown below.

So in the first box you would enter text like " Select your base color and the trim color."

And in the section box you would enter the items for each list

red
blue
green

white
brown
black

You can find a full description of how to use these in the online help.

It works! But...

Hi Jim,

Thank you very much for pointing me to the correct template fields. I'm not sure I would have found them on my own. Perhaps I should go back and complete a thorough tutorial on shopsite.

Initially it appeared to work great. I realize I didn't give any numbers but I have 135 colors they can pick from. It faithfully displayed this menu of all 135 colors no problem. But when I went to another product which is offered in two colors I wanted to have the menu of 135 colors for each of the two colors the other product is offered in. I know this sounds crazy but trust me. I put the blank line in between the two lists but it only displays one list. I went back in and deleted my long lists and put in three lists of about 7 colors each with a blank line in between them and it showed all three lists seperately like it is supposed to do. So is there a limitation on how many items can be in these lists? If so what is the limitation? Or is it something else.

Also, on a lesser important note. I am showing a thumbnail of these products and beside each thumbnail is a list of all the sizes they can buy the product in. 5 different sizes. As I mentioned before I have the thumbnail image attached to a MASTER product record and then I have 5 more product records assigned to the MASTER product records. These 5 items show up as line items of varying sizes and prices along with the thumbnail. With the menus added they show up also along with the thumbnail and I would prefer the drop down menus NOT SHOW up on the MASTER job record with the thumbnail but rather on the MORE INFO page after they click on the thumbnail it would take them to a more info page where all the drop down menus could be displayed.

At the moment though can you give me any guidelines as to the limitations of these drop down lists? :D

Thanks.

I created 3 sets of options with the numbers 1-150 in each option and all 150 show up in each of the dropdown menus. So if you are seeing a limit it must be a limit by the browser not ShopSite.

If you don't want the options to appear on the main product just leave the tag that displays them ([-- Order_Option_Menu line/column --] out of the [-- define product --] section of your template. You can include it in the [-- define subproduct --] section if you want them to display for the subproducts and you could include it in the [-- define more_info_page --] section if you them to appear on the moreinfo page.

Thanks Jim! You are AWESOME! I'm going to learn this stuff yet! I'm not sure why I was having trouble getting the three menus to work earlier but after carefully pasting the color list into the box twice and making sure there was a blank return between them it WORKS!!!

I especially appreciate the info on what to alter in the template so these options only appear on the more info screen. I noticed that on the CROSS SELL template these additional options only appear in the SHOPPING CART itself. But I really do want them to appear on the MORE INFO screen so I am good with the information you have provided. I think...

Thanks again. I'll come back if I need anymore helpful advice.
