Digital Download Previews?

Postby PapercutMusic » Mon Nov 06, 2006 6:03 pm

I am setting up a site that will allow visitors to purchase downloads of my production music. I want to be able to allow visitors to preview the songs without being able to save them. I am using my host's SiteDelux software to create the site. So far, I've been able to provide the "add to cart" link next to the song titles. Everything seems to be working great with respect to the ShopSite part of it. My problem really has nothing to do with ShopSite, but I hoped someone could help me out here.

I can set my site up to play each song when you click on the title. This brings up the quicktime player. Anyone with quicktime Pro can save the file after it finishes loading. I need visitors to be able to hear the song before they buy it, but not be able to save the file. I'm new to this website stuff, so I don't know if I need a streaming player for my site or what. Ideally, on my song page, I'd have the song title, then a play button next to it, then the "add to cart" link to shopsite next to that. Is that so hard to do?

Please, if anyone has any ideas on how to solve this problem, I'd love to hear from you.

thanks,

You could follow the iTunes model and only play a portion of the song when shoppers want to sample the music.

Thanks David. I've thought about that, and it looks like that's the way I'm going to go. I thought there might be a way to do it with streaming audio. But, I know that would take a streaming server and still might not solve the problem of being able to save the files.

I will probably make sample clips of my music, and then lay some vocals over the top to prevent people from saving and looping the sample clips.

I'm still up for suggestions, so if anyone has any other idea, I'd love to hear them.
