More Information Page and Search

Postby News » Wed Jul 18, 2001 11:45 am

I am wondering if I post information into the "more information text" field,
if it will be indexed and accessed by the search feature without publishing
more information pages? We are running 5.0 pro on a Cobalt server which is
a very hybrid proprietary Red Hat os.

Chuck -

Actually, to tell you the truth, it's an "I don't know, but if you want to
get serious about having a quality search engine for your store ..." kind of
message.

A generalized full-text search engine such as ShopSite's can never give you
the kind of features and control that we are providing for companies like
the Back Country Store (specialized keyword searches, prioritization of
results according to complex rules and logging of every search request) and
MediChest.com (searches by Brand, Category, UPC Code, etc.).

We also let you format your search results any way you want, including
limiting the total number of results and limiting the number of items per
page with automatic paging.

More details and examples including new info and graphics added yesterday at

If in your Preferences -> Search Settings you have it set to index More Info
Pages then you can

go to Utilities -> Publish and deselect the Generate Smart Tags and Generate
HTML options and then click the Regenerate button. This will index the products
(at least all the ones assigned to pages that are set to be indexed) including
the more info text (if you have the products set to use a more info page)
without generating the more info page.

Then PowerEdit all your products and turn the More Info pages off, go back to
Utilities -> Publish and re-select the Generate boxes turn off the Index box and
then when you do a Publish the regular pages will be generated without the More
Info pages, but the index will remain with the info from the More Info pages.

Each time you want to add new product info you want indexed you will have to do
this, turn on all the More Info pages in the products, turn off the Generate
options, turn on the Index option, Regenerate, turn off all the More Info pages
in the products, turn off the Index option and turn the Generate options back
on.

Note that even though the text from the More Info field is indexed and you can
find the product by searching for some text that is in the More Info field, the
search results don't ever point to the More Info page for a product, just to the
regular page it is on. Not in any currently released versions of ShopSite, that
is.
