Pull-down menus can't be added

I am using SS 8.0.1. In past months/years I have been able to set up and use pull-down menus. Recently we are unable to modify existing products or add new product and get pull-down menus to work.
We can get pull-downs to work by using COPY on and existing products with working Pull-downs, then edit the product name, sku, etc. We can even edit the Pull-down text for this copied product.
We just can't create a NEW product and make Pull-downs work. Or modify existing product to add Pull-downs.
Anyone else seeing this type of trouble.

When you create the new product with the pull-downs, are you checking the 'Display Ordering Options' checkbox (for existing products, this is in the Edit Product Layout menu)? If not, the pull-down will only show up when you add the product to the shopping cart, not on the store pages.
