Setting up Search Features

Postby Paul Schuster » Tue Aug 22, 2006 11:32 am

I'm trying to set up search features on a web project using custom templates. My other templates are working well, but this is my first ShopSite project and I havent found a step by step resource thats pulls together the various templates to perform a simple search. Can anyone direct me to a resource to help without paying for Shopsite support?

There are 3 templates involved in the search page:

1) The search template itself. It is similar to a Page template, but not quite.

2) Link Override template. This is actually a page template where only the DEFINE LINK_TO_PAGE section is used, this defines how the links to the store pages that a particular product is found on looks in the search results page. So this can be a very simple page template. Even simpler than the example DEFINE LINK_TO_PAGE section shown in this doc page:
http://www.shopsite.com/templates/examp ... links.html

3) Product Override template. This is a product template. The DEFINE PRODUCT section is used to define how the product itself will layout on the search results page, just as it would on a regular store page. The product template documentation is here:

I just went thru this and eventually cobbled together, thru trial and error, a decent customized search facility that includes a product thumbnail in the results.

It would be wonderful if SS provided a cookbook covering each of the three templates. The templates are way too complex for me. A few years ago someone here posted code for placing a divider between each returned result; I was never able to get that to work, for example.

In looking at many Shopsite sites, I notice that few of the small commerce sites bother changing the stock templates. OTOH, many of the larger and nicer sites simply outsource the search function with something like Picosearch.

One of the best examples of what Shopsite's own search can look like is found at:
