Using Shop Site Manager 7.1

I've created a custom template and it works perfectly. Now the client wants
to password protect the page. Outside of the Shop Site world, we know how to
do this using PHP. I created a PHP page as a template, uploaded it, created
a new page and... as instructed at the bottom of the new page form, gave it
an HTML extension. The PHP on the page doesn't work. Next... contrary to
the forms instructions saying it must have a HTML extension, I gave the new
page a PHP extension and it (not password protected yet, only displays an
extra line of text at the top left of the page as a test) It also appears as
if the rest of the page is working as well. I can click on any of the
products, get to the more info page, add it to the cart, etc.

Does using a PHP extension mess something up that I can't see?

No, it is fine to have your ShopSite pages end in .php. They will work fine.
The reason ShopSite says must end in .html is to stop users from naming
their pages with no extension, or making one up like socks.feet, as these
would not work in the browser.
