"Error In Form"

Postby Lilly » Mon Jan 09, 2006 4:40 pm

On my shopping cart, I enabled the product name to be linked back to the
page from which the product was ordered. The links work perfectly if I
order from my store pages. However, the links do not seem to work when the
products were added from a search results page. If I click the "add to
cart" button" from a search results page, the product gets added to the cart
with no problems. But when I click on the product name, I get the following
error message:

Error in Form!
We're sorry, but there was an error in your form data!
You must specify a valid value for: your storeid .
Please go back and try it again.

I also tested this on one of Shopsite's "shoppers" demo stores on Shopsite's
website, and received the same error message. I tested the shopper demo
store called "Tina's Toys - a ShopSite Manager store". First, I did a
search on the word "blocks", and resulted with the toy "Marble Blocks".
Then I clicked the "add to cart" button for Marble Blocks. The product
information got added to the cart, but when I click on the product name, I
received the same "Error in Form" message.

I would like the customer to be able to order from the search results page
as well and still be able to link back to the search page where he ordered
the product from. Is this possible? If not, should I eliminate the "add to
cart" button from search results? Any advice would be very helpful. Thank
you.

A customer just complained about the same error, but
in the registration process. This is of concern because
we had made some changes to our registration links
a few days ago. I asked her to explain the problem
in more detail and she replied:

" got this, but not the same way as before. Go to
your account registration page, do nothing and then
just press your cancel button. I did try to duplicate
my attempts last night but was successful this
morning. Hope this helped.

The error:

I believe the links all require the referrer information in order to
know where to go back to. There are lots of things that can affect the
referrer information. Here are some questions that might help pin point
the problem.

Are you using a ShopSite template or a custom one of your own?
What is a url where we can see the problem?
What browsers have you tried it in? Does it happen in all of them?
What firewall software are you running on the machine where your browser
is located? Does it block referrer information?

I've already taken out the "add to cart" button code from my search page
template because it was causing the link-back problem. So we can't test it
there now. However, you can see the same problem in one of Shopsite's demo
stores. I tested the shopper demo store called Tina's Toys for Shopsite
Manager (that's the version I'm using.)

http://eval.shopsite.com/shopper/tinas/index.html

From the demo's home page, I did a search on the word "duck". Search
results found one duck toy. I clicked the "add to cart" button. The toy
gets added to the cart. When I hover the mouse over the product name in the
cart, I notice that the store id is not in the URL of the <a href> tag:

<a href='http://eval.shopsite.com/cgi-bin/shopper/sc/productsearch.cgi#10'>
Rubber Duckie
</a>

So when I click on this link, I get the "Error in Form" message.

Here's the bizarre part. On this shopping cart, if I click on the "continue
shopping" button, that does bring me back to the search results page with
the duck toy. I clicked the "add to cart" button again to add a second duck
toy to the cart. On the cart page, if I hover the mouse over the SECOND
duck toy, the URL of the <a href> DOES contain the store id:

<a
href='http://eval.shopsite.com/cgi-bin/shopper/sc/productsearch.cgi?storeid=*146884970bee40e7106d7e3d&search_field=duck#10'>
Rubber Duckie
</a>

And when I click on this link of the second duck toy, I do get back to the
search results page where I ordered from.

So the first toy on the cart does NOT have the store id in its link-back
URL, but the second toy has it.

I tested this on IE and Firefox for Windows, and the same problem occurs.
I'm only using the WindowsXP firewall. And I did customize my store
templates. But if the same problem occurs in the demo store, then it
wouldn't be a template problem, and if the second toy's link-back URL works,
then it means the referrer information is not blocked, right? I just can't
figure out why the first item's link-back URL does not have the store ID,
and the second toy does (but only after I click the "continue shopping"
button to get back to the search page where I made the purchase.)

I already took out the "add to cart" button code from my search templates,
but I would like to put it back in if the problem can be resolved.

Please let me know if you see the same problem when you test it. I don't
have any idea what's causing it. Thanks for looking into the problem.

Lilly,
regarding this comment.

I already took out the "add to cart" button code from my search templates,
but I would like to put it back in if the problem can be resolved.

I think the better thing to do is to turn off having the product name in
the cart as a link to the page where it was ordered from. (Commerce
Setup > Order System > Shopping CArt > Product Name uncheck the checkbox)

The purpose of search is to help people buy your products and you want
people to add items to the shopping cart since this is the first step in
finalizing an order. Very few of them would use the product name link
since there is already a Continue Shopping button which will take them
back to the last page ordered from. By removing the add to cart button
from the search results screen you take away the best opportunity for
someone to start the buying process.

Compare this to going grocery shopping. You ask a clerk where to find
something, say bread, (Search for Bread) and he says aisle 5. You go to
aisle 5 and put a loaf of bread in your cart(Add to cart button). What
would happen if you went to aisle 5 as the clerk (Search) directed and
all the bread was in a locked cabinet (no Add to Cart button) so you
couldn't put a loaf in your cart? Once you have the bread in your cart
you wander through the store adding items (Continue Shopping button) to
your cart. Now what is the chance that you want to go back and get
another loaf of bread when you look in your shopping cart?
