Using SKUs Instead of Item Numbers

Postby Rick Steven » Sat Oct 22, 2005 9:13 am

Are there any disadvantages, or limitations to using SKUs instead of Item
Numbers? Will the entire system work identically or are there differences
that I should consider?

Thanks for your help,

Rick

The one disadvantage of using SKU's instead of item numbers is that you
need to remember to rebuild the sku database when you add products.
This is done under Merchandising > Order Anywhere and click the Generate
SKU Database button. If you forget to do that then when someone tries
to add a product that hasn't been indexed to the cart they will get an
error.

Other than that things function the same by sku or item number.

Thanks Jim, I appreciate your help.

I have another quick question that is related. The reason I want to use
SKUs is because I am custom designing a bunch of product pages and it is
much easier for me to remember the sku than the itemnum.

When I create Order Anywhere html for each product, my storeid string
changes depending on the product. Is there a reason for this, or can I just
use a single one with every item throughout my store? It seems to work by
simply choosing one and using it over and over again on each page.

Thanks,

Rick Steven

The storeid is an encrypted value and will be different each time it is
generated by ShopSite but will always resolve back to the same name as
what you use to login to your store. You can use any of the encrypted
values that ShopSite has generated or you could us the actual storeid
you use to login. (The value is encrypted because on a Windows system
the storeid is the actual login name for the merchant on the server. It
would make it easier for someone to hack the machine if they knew a
login. On Unix systems the storeid isn't an actual user on the server.)

It sure would be nice for the store to generate skus automatically when you
saved a product, if one had that option chosen as the default. Is there a
way that you can put this on the wishlist for me?

thanks again.

Do you mean "generate skus automatically" or generate the sku database
automatically?

Generate the SKU database automatically - maybe at the same time as a
publish command.
