If a product will be an oversized item you should use the option on the
Product Info screen "Shipping Box Dimensions:" to specify the box size.
The item's shipping cost will then be calculated by UPS based on the
dimension and the weight.

Hi Jim,
I'm aware of the shipping box dimensions-- the problem is that ShopSite
doesn't give the correct value for oversize packages. For example, to send
a 3.0lb. 96x2x2 package from us to DC via UPS Ground, ShopSite calculates
the charge as $11.58. If I enter the same package on UPS's website, I get
$16.58. The reason for the difference is a $5.00 handling charge which UPS
imposes on oversize packages.
I'm not sure how ShopSite interfaces with UPS's server, but I'm guessing
it's grabbing the package charge instead of the shipment total charge.

Kevin,
ShopSite interfaces directory to UPS's rates and services api's. ShopSite
does not calculate rates at all, just passes the information about the
products to UPS, who calculates the rates and passes them back.
I added a test product to my store with a weight of 3.0 lbs, when I placed
the item in my cart UPS specified a Ground rate of $6.17 (to zip code
90210). I emptied the cart and edited the test product info to switch it
to using dimensions of 96x2x2, then added the product to the cart again
and UPS returned a $11.58 rate for Ground. For a difference of $5.41. So
UPS *DID* taking the dimensions into account and returned a different rate
to the ShopSite shopping cart once I added those dimensions to the
product.
Besides making sure that the product has dimensions specified, also make
sure that the radio button is set next to the dimensions field so that the
dimensions will be sent to UPS. Also, make sure that in Commerce Setup -
Shipping you have the correct Unit of Measure (probably inches) selected
for your measurements. Also in Commerce Setup -> Shipping -> Configure UPS
make sure that you have the same options selected as far as pickup and
delivery go that you are using when you manually get the rates from UPS's
site. Also, when you make modification to a product's weight or
dimensions, you should empty your cart and add the product to the cart
again to see the results of these product changes, because a product is
added to the shopping cart with the attributes it had at the time it was
added.

It appears that this is an individual field in each product record. You
could
apply or not apply it item by item. Or do you also ship via other methods

you talking about a package that becomes oversized only when boxed with
