Ordering more than available - continue anyway

Postby NuQ » Tue Jul 26, 2005 11:23 am

If a customer has ordered more than my current inventory they can not
proceed thru the checkout process until they manually reduce the quality in
the shopping cart. If more than one product needs adjusting Shop Site warns
the customer one product at a time.

In other words, if they order 10 pieces of widget A and 10 pieces of Widget
B, but my inventory only has 5 of each, the shopping cart warns "Product:
Widget A. In stock: 5
There is not enough of this product in stock to fulfill your order - Please
REDUCE the quantity ordered"

The customer will reduce the quanity to 5 for Widget A, then click Update or
Recalculate. Then another warning appears at the top of the shopping
stating...
Product: Widget B.
In stock: 5
There is not enough of this product in stock to fulfill your order - Please
REDUCE the quantity ordered.

A lot of times the customer doesn't realize that the warning is for a
different product and complains that "is it not working".

What I'd like to have is the option to just have Shop Site automatically
reduce the quantity and not prevent the customer from proceeding thru the
checkout process.

Is there an option for this already? If not, what is the solution? Thanks!

There is no option to have ShopSite automatically reduce the quantity.

How would the shopper get 2 different line items in the cart at the same
time with a quantity greater than your inventory? The warning about not
enough product is displayed when an item is added to the cart so they
should only see the message for one product at a time. Are you using a
form that adds multiple items to the cart at the same time?

The problem with automatically reducing the quantity is that the shopper
may not notice that it was reduced and they finalize the order. Then get
upset when the order arrives with not as many as they think they
ordered. Forcing them to make the change elimiates this problem.

Thanks, Jim. Yes, I am using a form that adds multiple items to the
shopping cart. I do understand that it might upset some customers.
However, they will have the option to review the final order before
submitting, so hopefully they will notice. But, since it can't be done, the
point is moot.

As always, thanks for your help, Jim.
