Hi Larry,
Gift certificates are money. For security purposes it was
purposefully designed so that the gift certificate and the code are
only being given to the person for whom it is intended. Just like you
would never give someone the pin number for your credit card, you
should not want anyone but the recipient to receive the code and pin
for the gift certificate.
Both the shopper and the merchant will receive the order email
saying that the gift certificate was purchased. The email gift
certificates can be configured so that they can be sent automatically
at the time the order is placed or manually when the order is
processed. There is an interface to allow the gift certificate to be
resent to the recipient or to the shopper if they did not receive it for
some reason.
Regarding sending a copy of the email to the merchant to verify that
it was sent. If the shopper put a bad email address for the recipent
of the gift certificate the mail server will bounce the message and
the merchant will receive the bounced email thus alerting them of a
problem. There are many reason why a person might not receive
an email including spam filters, not checking their email, problems
with network after the email was sent etc. There is no way that you
can guarantee that someone will receive an email just as you have
no control of a letter after you drop it in the post office mail box.
(Case in point. The other night on the news there was an article
about a postcart received recently that was mailed in 1937. Where
has it been for the last 68 years?)
Can you give us a good case as to why the merchant and purchaser
of a gift certificate would need to get a copy of the certificate? If
so we could consider it for a future release. If you have any other
product suggestions we would be glad to hear about them too.

Jim, when you say "There is no way to verify that the email was sent or to
have a CD sent to you" I hope you mean that this is not currently possible
with the ShopSite Gift Certificate feature. Getting a copy of the same email
that is sent to the recipient is very important to us. We currently do not
use the ShopSite Gift Certificate feature but I am thinking about it however
this information about emails tells me the feature is not mature enough for
our purposes. We not only want a copy of the email sent to the recipient,
but we also want to CC our customer so they know the gift certificate email
was sent.
I also want the ability to control when the email is sent to the recipient.
Some customers are very specific about what day they want the recipient
notified.
