Thanks, Jim.
So, when I set the columns options in Preferences > Search Settings > Search
Layout...I'm just spinning my wheels because it doesn't really do anything?
The site is
www.swtrading.net. I would like the results page to look
similar to the rest of the product pages.

It is possible but will require special coding in the page, and product
templates and possibly also the link template, so none of the existing
templates could be used out of the box. The default search templates
provided with 7.1 only emulate the way search results were displayed in
version 7.0 they do not incorporate new functionality.
There are some things to consider before implementing the results in
columns. What do you want the results to look like? There may be several
product that match the search that have a single page link. Subproducts
are normally displayed with the parent product how is this going to be
displayed. Some product may not be assigned to a page but yet will have a
search link. etc,etc,etc.

Using SS 7.1.1 Pro.
Preferences > Search Settings > Search Layout. I have set the Columns
option to 4 columns, but the results are displayed in only 1 column. I
have set the Product Template Override: option to my custom template.
What am I doing wrong? If more info is needed, please let me know.
Thank you.
Anyone? Anyone? I have tried many different templates combos to get the
results displayed in columns, but no luck. The help file says...
Columns
Indicate how many columns to display search results in.
Anyone have an example site that shows the results displaying in more
that one column?
