conversion tracking with Shopsite and Google

Postby Steve Doherty » Thu Oct 30, 2003 4:12 pm

Using Google AdWords new conversion tracking tool, you can track conversions
to sale. You can track exact sales dollar amounts. According to Googles
instructions at https://adwords.google.com/select/faq/c ... .html#Set8,
they say:

If the value is not a constant but instead changes (as with a shopping
cart), you'll need to place a dynamic variable (such as Total_Cost) into the
field in order to track properly. Make sure that the value of the variable
will be the total value of the purchase(s) when the page is loaded.

I asked Googlefor more detailed instructions on this, but what exactly I am
supposed to put there depends upon my shopping cart and how it works.

So, using Shopsite, does anyone know what exactly I am supposed to use for
the "dynamic variable" in order to track the dollar amount of the sales? Do
I have to tweak Shopsite in some way or is there a simple answer I am not
seeing?

Thanks very much for any help.

The way to get the dynamic variables would be via the Order API feature
of ShopSite Pro. All order variables can be passed to a custom program
of your making that can do various things with this information.

Thanks for your input. I thought the answer was going to be something like
that. My problem is that I don't know how to make a custom program that will
do this.

This method is not as good but it could be an alternate method. When paying
for ads, we like to give an associate link (web address part only) as the
link to our site. When an order comes in, it has the ad site listed on it.
When we input the ad into the accounting program, we just put the ad site in
as a class. Then you can get a report from the accounting program by class.
If you have a small number of ad words, you could give each word a different
code, such as googleA, googleB to tell which is working best.

Norman,

Yes! I finally thought of doing that recently. I never used the associate
feature so it never occured to me that I could use that feature in this way.
I will do that. I would like to do both methods actually. Thanks for the
input.

If you try it, remember to only give the http part between the quotes
"http:..." for the link. Google will add the rest itself.

It looks like Overture has the same type of thing as Google, they call
it Conversion Counter, http://www.content.overture.com/d/USm/ac/ba/cc.jhtml.
