Free Shipping for lower 48, charge for others?

Postby Brian Williams » Wed Jul 23, 2003 8:08 pm

Is this possible?

I'm stuck shipping UPS, which means if someone from Hawaii or Alaska wants
to place an order, I have to ship it by Air, obviously much more expensive.

Is there a way for me to give free shipping except if you live in 1 of these
areas? Or internationally?

I would appreciate ANY help!

Thanks,

Brian

There is no way to do this via the UPS realtime shipping quotes, because UPS is
obviously not going to quote anyone free shipping. If you are using ShopSite Pro
6.3 you could use the Custom Shipping Add-on api and have a custom module
created that would present a separate free shipping option according to your
criteria (would not remove any of the other options from UPS, though).

Hi, Loren,

I would disable real time UPS and make it something like:

FREE STANDARD SHIPPING: Free
3-DAY EXPEDITED SHIPPING: $15.00
2-DAY EXPEDITED SHIPPING: $20.00

The problem with this is someone from Alaska orders and selects the free
shipping option, when the only way for me to get it to him would cost me
$20.

Any ideas? I can't afford someone to write a custom shipping add-on.

Thanks.

Brian

The only shipping methods that present specific shipping options to the shopper
based on their location is UPS and the Custom Shipping Add-on (if the custom
module is programmed to do so). The other shipping methods/tables rely on the
shopper to select the shipping option, and all shoppers are presented with all
of the options regardless of their location.

So basically my only option is to limit orders to the lower 48.

OK, thanks, Loren.

We ship to the 48 states free using the built in Shopsite shipping and use
UPS for 3 2 and 1 day shipping with the cost passed on to the customer. We
also offer shipping to HI an AK via the US Post Office and charge by weight
using the Shopsite built in shipping method. It is clumsy because the
customer must make a manual selection but it seems to work fine. Using this
method we also take APO orders which is a very good business.
