?! Empty newsgroup / question concerning IP/hostname

Postby Nikolaus Gruchot » Mon Jun 23, 2003 7:39 am

Echo?! Somebody here?

Two days I could not connect to the shopsite newsgroup and now all messages
are gone?

Actually I have also a question:

We are running shopsite V 6.3 and there is the IP address saved with each
order. Right besides the IP it reads: "host name not determined". Funny
thing is that for none of the orders the host name was ever determined?!

Is this due to the fact that all shoppers are using dial-up connections or
is there maybe a setting with our server that prevents the IP to be
translated into a host name.

Thanx and best regards,

Niko

If it always says 'host name not determined', then yes, it is likely a
setting in your webserver's configuration. Something like
'HostnameLookups Off' in the apache config would have that affect. Note
that some people turn it off because it makes the webserver run slightly
faster (doesn't have to do a reverse lookup on the IP every hit is
coming from to see if it can determine the hostname).
