reasons why order doesn't show up

We've been testing a new product and placing test orders.
The last order, #1401, isn't showing up in the SS list of orders. The last one shown is #1400.
But, acknowledgements were sent to the customer and to our merchant accounts and PayPal acknowledged the credit card payment they handled.

what are some reasons this might have happened?

Which of PayPal's many payment methods are you using?

I've run two test purchases. Both using a credit card (the same card)
The first order went through and shows up and the 2nd one went through but isn't showing up

Which PayPal payment method are you using? They have at least 5 that contain PayPal in the name. PayPal Express, PayPal Standard, PayPal Payments Pro, PayPal Payments Advanced, PayPal Payflow Pro, and they also have BrainTree and at least one other one.

Could a setting on your PayPal account have gotten switched between the two orders?
If you are using PayPal Standard it could be that the IPN is being blocked for some reason.

Unlikely anything changed between orders. The two orders were close together.
And both were recognized by Paypal: the test customer received Paypal email and the charges showed up on our Visa transaction list.
It was the ShopSite Order page that never got the order.

Looking at the acknowledgement of the charge from Paypal, it just says "Paypal" and nothing more.

You can check which PayPal method you have connected to ShopSite by going to Commerce Setup > Payment Setup; however, having gone to your website (which you listed in another thread), I would guess that you are using PayPal Standard. PayPal has made some changes in the last few years to their PayPal Standard integration with ShopSite. That could be affecting the order showing up in ShopSite.

-Beginning Sept 11 or 12 2012, PayPal Standard orders not recorded in ShopSite, failed IPN notifications from PayPal
