Old "Comments" Message Shows Up in New Order

Postby Larry Bohen » Thu May 01, 2003 12:15 pm

A customer placed an order in December 2002 and asked in the "Comments"
section of online order that we we ship the order as a gift to another
person.

We received another order from this customer today who says that the message
in her December 2002 order was still in the "Comments" section of the order
placed today. I'm not sure why she didn't erase the message because it came
through on her final order.

Why would the December 2002 "Comments" message still be in the ShopSite
order process?

The information is kept in a cookie on the shoppers computer along with
their address information.

Information in the "Comments" or "Order Instructions" section of an order
should be deleted or ignored in a subsequent order. Keeping it just confuses
the customer. Should I submit this as an enhancement?

It is kept in the cookie not for the next order, but in case the shopper is not
done with the current order. For example, their credit card is declined, so they
have to go back to the checkout page to re-enter a new card number, they will
not have to fill in that field again. Credit card info is not stored in the
cookie for security reasons.

Once the order is finalized/completed, can any text in the "Comments" and
"Order Instructions" be deleted so they don't appear in a subsequent order?

OK, I'm still new to Javascript and all, but couldn't the cookie be set to
expire after a certain time period? What is the default for the cookie
expiration?

I thought it was like 7 days or something... months is rediculous. I
think there is somewhere you can set it in SS though...

The length of time a non-completed shopping cart is kept can be
configured on the Commerce Setup > Order System Screen. This has little
or nothing to do with the cookies on the shopper browser.

I set my browser to prompt when a cookie is about to be set and the main
cookie that contains the shoppers address and the Comments has an
expiration date of 1 year.

The setting in Commerce Setup -> Order System for days to keep
unfinished shopping carts (Pro-only) DOES affect *A* cookie, just not
the cookie originally the reason for this thread. It affects the length
of time the shopping cart ID cookie is valid, but not the address
cookie, which as Jim mentioned is set to about a year, and the time on
the address cookie cannot be modified by a setting anywhere.

I have submitted the following request to ShopSite at
http://www.shopsite.com/help/contact/enhancement.html. I request that
information in the "Comments" or "Order Instructions" section of an order be
deleted when the online order process is final/complete.

I request that others submit this to ShopSite as well.

One request is all that is needed. ;-) We'll look at it for a future
release.
