Add Customer ID field to Customer Table

I was shocked to find that the Customer Registration section is based on an email and not a login id. People change emails very often. Is it possible to at least add a customer ID field that I can use so that when I download the orders there is a direct mapping of that ID field so that there is no doubt that a customer is who it is?
