Too Slow when Applying a Coupon

Postby alfie » Sun Oct 13, 2013 5:40 pm

hello!

I would like to ask, why is it take too long to apply a coupon to the shopping cart? What should I do to make it faster? Please advice.

Thanks,
alfie :)

Adding a coupon in the cart should take practically no time at all, maybe 1/2 a second at most. If it is taking a long amount of time I would guess that you have one or more real-time shipping methods such as UPS, USPS or FedEx enabled and recalculating the shipping rates is what is causing the delay.

There isn't much you can do to improve internet speed itself. But here are a few things that will affect it somewhat that you might want to consider.

If you are using multiple shipping options, UPS, USPS, FedEx, Shipping API , some amount of time is required to contact each shipper and get the rate quote. The quotes aren't requested all at once but one is requested, then the next, and so on. So if there is a delay in one or more of then it slows down the recalculation of the cart by as long as the delay takes. So limiting the number of shipping options you offer could speed up the recalc time.

These next two deal with your hosting company selection so it might not be possible to do anything about it at the current time but might come in handy in the future as your business grows.
1. Make sure your store is hosted on a fast server. Most hosting companies, that offer cheap hosting, overload the servers with many different sites and limit the amount of time that any one hosting account gets to use the CPU. This can cause some delay in processing requests for such things as recalculating the order. Having a dedicated server where only your store is on the server can help in this reqard, it may be more expensive month to month but in the long run you will be better off.

2. When selecting a hosting service make sure that the hosting company has good bandwidth and isn't just running the servers through a low speed internet connection.
