Page Sorting Nightmare

Postby J. Cataudella » Tue Mar 18, 2003 11:13 am

I've recently upgraded to Pro 6.1 which is excellent. btw. Anyway, I can
never figure out what's going on with one particular area of sorting, for
example:

Under page layout, I'll have:
Order: Ascending
Product Sort Field: Name
Page Sort Field: Name (and I also tried Link Name)

And I wind up with sorting like this...

MLB SlugFest
Madden 2003

It seems to put abbreviated products above non-abbreviated, despite
situations like above, with the second letter being an "L" in MLB, which
should come *after* Madden, seeing that the second letter in Madden is
obviously an "a".

Is this something to do with capitals?

Another, even more annoying example:

I have a section with titles marked A-H
All sorting is correct, except I have a series of products that begin with
lower case "e", followed by a dash.
Ex: e-Reader series 1
e-Reader series 2

These products are getting sorted to the bottom of the list, as opposed to
being with the rest of the products beginning with the letter E. In other
words, all of my e-series products are coming AFTER products beginning with
the letter H. Any clues?

I don't want to use the "Assign Item" command, as I find that too tedious
for the amount of items I have to deal with daily.
Thanks for any help!

Sorting is case sensitive so capital letters are sorted above lowercase

letters. I don't know any way around it except manually arranging them.

Thanks for the fast answer - well, at least I know it wasn't me. :0

That's kind of bad news; I hope the developers add an option to give us a
choice between case-sensitive/non, in the near future as it really confuses
customers who may not realize upper case has priority on one's listings.

If you get daily stock, and have fairly large pages, assigning items
manually (while a good option to have) is a huge hassle.

Don't know if this will help, but, if you have an unused alphanumeric
field in your product database, you could enter the product name in all
lower case or all capitals without spaces or punctuation marks - and
then sort by that field. Using your examples:

MLB SlugFest = mlbslugfest or MLBSLUGFEST
Madden 2003 = madden2003 or MADDEN2003
e-Reader series 1 = ereaderseries1 or EREADERSERIES1
e-Reader series 2 = ereaderseries2 or EREADERSERIES2

and they would be sorted as...

ereaderseries1
ereaderseries2
madden2003
mlbslugfest

....which looks like what you want. The down side is having to populate
the database with essentially duplicate titles.
