Customer passwords on moved store

Postby DBurdick » Tue May 14, 2013 6:45 am

Hi

I'm moving a store using the instructions on http://shopsite.com/help/11.2/en-US/sc/pro/index.htm?page=/help/11.2/en-US/install/tech_ref.html. My question is will the system retain customer passwords so they will not have to register again?

Yes. If you move the database to the new location and the store's authorization file is the same then the customer login's will remain the same.

Just found out I don't have access to the data directory on the new server so I will have to follow the instructions at http://shopsite.com/help/11.2/en-US/sc/pro/index.htm?page=/help/11.2/en-US/install/tech_ref.html. Will this method transfer the customer passwords?

You will need to have access to the data directory inorder to copy the current data files into the new store. If you don't have that access you would have to start the store from scratch and upload your pages and products and customers from xml or tab delimited files. You would also need to re-configure your shipping setting, payment settings, discounts, coupons, gift certificates and many other things. If you can't get the data copied into the new store any giftcertificates or coupons which you have created will no longer be valid. Although you can upload the customers their password information is not in the download file so it will not be uploaded to the new store. You will have to assign a new password to each registered user and let them know what that password is before they will be able to login. Note that if you are using your own custom templates you would also need to recreate them in the new store since they are also stored in the data directory.

So you should really try to get access to the data directory by FTP. If the host won't give you access you should see if they will move the data directory files for you.

The files have been placed in the storedata directory and I have uploaded the media files. Everything is looking good except when I go to Products or Pages in the control panel there are no pages or products listed. So I figured I needed to use the DB download function in the control panel. I downloaded them in tab delimited 11.2 format but when I try and upload them I get a blank page with a big "Error" at the top. There's no further information. Any thoughts on what I'm doing wrong?

Did you move the data directory to the new location and then run the install? That is the only way that I can think of that there would be no pages and products in the store after the install.

You should have done the install to the new location, Then copied the data directory from the old store to the new one. And then run the install again only use the Upgrade option and and not the Install a new ShopSite option.

Are you trying to download the Pages and Products from the old store or the new store? ONce you download the pages/Products open the file in a spread sheet program or text editor and see if they actually contain anything.

I don't know what would be causing an "Error" when trying to upload, unless there is something wrong with the file format or the cgis in the store are corrupt. YOu may want to consider purchasing a support incident (probably the Upgrade Help option) from http://www.shopsite.com/upgrade_pricing.html
