UPLOAD EXCEL STATE TAX TABLE for Commerce Set-up

Postby ericray » Thu May 16, 2013 4:14 pm

My State (WA) has 256 in-state tax zones for which I am req. to collect for if sales are in-state. Can I upload an excel doc (which the state provides) into shopsite (somewhere and somehow)?

Thanks

I am using MANAGER. I can not believe I have to pay for AvaTax or whatever to make this work or enter 256 names and rates in tables.

There is no way to upload the tax rate tables they need to be manually configured on the Commerce Setup > Tax > Tax by zip screen. If you have the data in a spread sheet it shouldn't be to hard to just copy and past each set of zip codes that have a specific rate in to an individual field and set the name and rate for that field.

Except Washington State does not use a zip code system. They are tax zones. #256 of them. So - what you are saying is that if a customer from Washington comes to the site and makes a purchase - they must scroll through 256 names to find their town or part of a county to select the proper tax and I also must enter 256 names and rates? I have been to shopping sites where the backroom software executes that selection somehow by referencing an input table.

ShopSite works with zipcodes only not town names or tax jurisdictions. You enter the zipcodes that have the same tax into a single field using the ? character as a wild card, for example 84??? would match any zipcode from 84000 to 84999 and 8412? would match any code form 84120 to 84129. When the shopper enters their zipcode into the shopping cart the software will look through the tax table and match their zipcode to one of the entries in the table and compute the tax based on the rate assigned to that group of zip codes.

It really shouldn't be too hard to set the table up if you have the data provided by the state and it contains zipcodes for the various areas. I know we have a number of merchants in Washington who are using the Tax by Zip method and it works fine for them.

The only other option is to use Avalara's AvaTax which also uses the zipcode for its initial tax calculation and then when the shopper enters their full address another calculation is done to see if it changes the tax at all. Avalara Avatax works great but ther is a charge for transactions run through their system.
