Themes and Templates

Postby Gaspumpman » Thu Mar 14, 2013 7:19 pm

Me again. My site became a teenager (13 years) this week and really really needs a makeover. What I want to know, is there any way to play with different themes on a test page without having the existing Header show up? Better yet, can I create an all new header for just the test page?

Changing the theme from Preferences > Themes will change the templates, colors, layout, etc of everything in your store. The store header is global so you can't create one specific for a particular page but you can turn it off on a page by going to Pages > Edit Page Layout and unchecking the Display header checkbox.

You can change the template for a specific page or product but it will not give you the full affect of changing the theme. If you want to experiment I recommend getting a demo store at http://www.shopsite.com/demo.html. You can upload your pages and products and some of your images to that store and then switch themes so you can see how things look.

Working with the Dynamic.sst template. The product page is displaying both a thumbnail image and below that a full size image right above the add to cart button. Is there any way to turn off the larger image in the template? http://ademostore.com/ssdemos/ver112/evaluate6/gasboyparts.html

The large image is coming from the text you entered in the product description
Code: Select all
Kit includes parts to refresh your 115V pump to like new performance. Kit fits 70, 1800 and 390 series pumps.

<li>#2 031285 Rotor Key
<li>#3 051475 Rotor

<li>#9 049002 O-Ring, Square Cut

</ul>

The small image on the left is coming from the product image that you have assigned, BP4210-01.jpg. You could select "none" for the product image instead of having an image and then publish which would remove the small image. Or remove the image code in the description to get rid of the large one.

Jim you are good. I copied that over from a more info page. One other question with this template. When you go to checkout screen the totals are outside the margin of the page.

I cheated -;) I logged into the demo store and looked to see what you had configured for the product.

What browser are you using for the shopping cart? It looks fine in Firefox (19.0.2) and Google Chrome (25.0.1364.172) and in IE 7 (although the store page has the image overlaying the text in IE 7.)

Yes, Chrome looks fine but doesn't most of the World use IE7 or a previous version? Next question. The area at the bottom of the page in this template is a dark blue. When I placed my Footer text in the page layout it showed up as black text which cant be seen on that background. Right now I have the text placed in the text 3 box but that won't work in the real site.

I think most of the world has moved on to later releases of IE. They still have the biggest share of the market, but I think you will find IE 8 and 9 are the largest market today.

I guess I have IE9 running on my machine. My point was that ShopSite pages really should work in ALL browsers, not just firefox and chrome.

Our template designer uses IE so they should be working with at least the latest versions of IE. We try very hard to get the templates to work with all the major browser. However there is no way to guarantee that they will work with every browser since they do not all follow a single standard, although they all claim they do. IE is notorious for making their own standards but they don't even worry about making things compatible between older versions and their latest versions. That is why they had to introduce the compatibility option setting in their browser because they know that they break things with their latest versions that worked in earlier version.

I don't see any text in the footer area of your pages in the demo store. Have you removed it? The sample images show navigation type links in the blue area at the bottom of the page and they are white so they can be seen.

This is just how my luck goes. I have just spent the past 5 days working on a demo site theme (Dynamic.sst) I have it working and like the layout so I move over to my store to make the changes only to fine that my version PRO 11 does not have this theme in the list. Let me guess, I need to buy an upgrade?

The Dynamic Theme was added in version 11 sp2 (see URL below). So if you have version 11.0 then you would need to upgrade if you do want to use the dynamic theme.

If you are hosted with Webex, you should be able to get the latest service package release through them.
