Issue with Facebook Like

Postby Paula » Thu Aug 30, 2012 6:33 am

Received this from a customer this morning:

I just wanted to bring something to your attention:
when I "liked" the purple iris earring on my FB page, the wrong picture appeared on the posting:

I tried a few myself, and they bring up the wrong picture, i.e. a secondary image of the main image or one from the cross-sells.

I think the facebook code scans the page and just guesses on which product image to use. You should be able to use a meta tag to control which image to use for facebook. This is something I would suggest adding into the template. You would add something similar to the following into your product template, within the DEFINE MORE_INFO_PAGE section, somewhere between the <head> and </head> tags:

<meta property="og:image" content="[-- IF PRODUCT.MoreInformationGraphic --][-- OUTPUT_DIRECTORY_URL --]/media/[-- IMAGE PRODUCT.MoreInformationGraphic --][-- ELSE_IF PRODUCT.Graphic --][-- OUTPUT_DIRECTORY_URL --]/media/[-- IMAGE PRODUCT.Graphic --][-- END_IF --]"/>

I checked with our developer that works on the Facebook implementation in ShopSite and here is what he said:

"Facebook picks the image. There is a way they can try and manipulate it, but it is ultimately up to the script that Facebook runs when looking at the page to like it. They need to remember that facebook will look for a picture that's size and dimensions closely fits their thumbnail size, so that is probably why it is picking the mostly square picture that is full of color. They can look at Facebook's Open Graph Protocol https://developers.facebook.com/docs/opengraphprotocol/ to see how they can improve it."

I looked at the opengraphprotocol doc and it looks like you would need to add a bunch of meta tags and other information to the page in order to get the exact image you want selected by Facebook. You might want to check out the documentation and see if it is something you would want to do.

Thank you. Unfortunately I'm not very technical and don't have a clue as to what I'm doing - and don't want to mess things up. I have no idea where to add these tags; when I go into a product, there are no body or other tags.

Is this something Shopsite could perhaps add in the future?

I believe it is in some of the newer ShopSite templates, but I will log it as an enhancement request for all ShopSite templates.

I can't say since it hasn't been added yet. It will likely be in the next release of ShopSite, whether that is a full version release or a service pack.
