Hi,

I had this working before and I don't know what I did to break it!

Essentially, I need the zip code field in the shopping cart in order to figure the sales tax. But there is no shipping cost to the customer since shipping is included in the cost.

On the checkout page, it is auto-filling the zip code entered for sales tax in the bill to address. The billing address could be a completely different address than the zip code calculated for tax purposes. The customer then chooses a pre-populated list for delivery in the city.

How do I get this working again where the sales tax zip and the billing zip code do not need to be the same?

The zip filled in on the shopping cart screen is the Ship To zip. When the form is submitted to go to the payment screen the zip will be populated in both the Billing and Shipping zipcode fields. On the payment screen the zip in the billing address can be changed without affecting the tax (or shipping if you had it enabled). However, if the zip in the shipping address changes, tax will need to be recalculates so a warning will be displayed and the shopper will need to go back to the cart to make the change. This is the way it has worked in ShopSite for as long as I can remember.

(Note: If you have customer registration enabled or you have a cookie from a prior order the billing address zip could have a different zip than the shipping one when you get to the payment screen since it would use the saved address information)

I think I got around it for now by doing a different tax option but eventually, I will want people ti fill in a zip code, since there is no shipping address that people fill in (they choose from a drop down menu).

So, I didn't have shipping fields at all in my checkout screen, only the Bill To fields and that was where I got the error -- the zip code field on the shopping cart screen and the bill to zip codes were not allowed to be different.

Any thoughts on configuring it so that if I want people to enter in a zip code, fill in billing information that will have a different billing zip code, and no ship to address?

No, if you only have the billing address displayed then the zipcode used there will be the one entered on the shopping cart screen. I don't understand "since there is no shipping address that people fill in (they choose from a drop down menu). "
How are you doing that.

Note that if you are using credit cards the payment gateway may require that the billing zip match the address on file for that credit card. So if someone changes the billing zip the card may get declined.

I don't need the people to fill in a shipping address since we currently only deliver to select locations, so it's a custom field that they pick from a drop down.

It looks like though, if I want to expand out, I'll have to build out the shopping cart so it can do what I need it to do. Thanks though!
