Can we put Drop-down list onto product pages? (Shopsite Pro

Postby A Stewart » Mon Nov 11, 2002 6:44 am

Shopsite SC Pro 6.1.1

Hi

Is there anyway to put the drop-down list onto
the Smart-tags page?

We are selling shoes. Is there any way
to put the sizing dropdown list on to
the SmartHTML (ie static catalogue) pages,
rather than just have them on the shopping
basket page?!

Is there any way to put drop-down lists onto product pages?
It seems that this could be *critically* important to my
client.

If you find that you cannot achieve the look you need with ShopSite's page
building capabilities, you might want to check out the ECom Assembler from
Stone Edge Technologies. The ECom Assembler was originally written for
several ShopSite stores that needed more control over their pages. It builds
static pages that use Order Anywhere tags so they work with ShopSite's
shopping cart. You can read more about the ECom Assembler at
http://stoneedge.com/ecomassembler.htm or give me a call to discuss it.

Ship,

What type of drop-down list are you referring to? If you are referring
to the order options that normally display in the shopping cart screen,
there is a checkbox (Check here to display this product's Ordering
Options menu) on the Edit Product Layout screen that will cause the
dropdowns to also appear on the store pages.

Jim

Sounds promising! :)

But can it be done using SmartHTML ("SmartTags"?)
or do we have to use templates to generate
these pages ??

(Yikes - we have recreated our entire site (200+) products
using SmartHTML rather than using templates which we
found too constricting. Mind you, that was several release
of ShopSite ago... )

Jim

Oh dear...

Yes, these *are* the options to which I refer.
However on closer inspection the option you
refer to only switches them on and off from appearing
on the shopping basket page.

However sadly there does *not* seem to be any
option for making this drop-down list appear
on the product content pages... :[

This is serious. We may have to abandon this software
(and several years of development effort in shopsite)
as a result.

Ship,

The options Jim mentioned does NOT turn the display of the pull-down on or off on the shopping
cart. If pull-down options are defined for the product, they will show up in the shopping cart,
no matter what you have this setting set to.

This setting DOES affect whether or not the pull-down appears on the store page *IF* you are
using normal ShopSite Pages using the built-in product templates or custom product templates
(assuming you use the correct tags in the custom template to access this feature).

There is not a tag to use it in Custom Pages, AKA SmartTags. If you would like to put the HTML
for the pull-down on your page you can, but you would need to manually do this in your custom
page for each product. If you check the options Jim described, then the Merchandising ->
OrderAnywhere button will give you the pull-downs in the OrderAnywhere code for the products.

Thanks

Just to let you know, however that this
lack of ability to update dropdownlist
in Custom Pages is a disaster for us.
We have spent many hours creating custom pages
and now our client is insisting that dropdown
lists *must* be on the product pages, otherwise
(after 3 years of use) we'll have to leave shopsite! :((

As you say we could go back to templates but
we now have such an investment in Custom Pages
that the client is saying it would be better to
start again with a fresh copy of some new software
Oh dear. We'd gotten rather fond of ShopSite... !

As I mentioned, you can use the code from OrderAnywhere in your Custom
Pages.

Ship,
How similar are the custom pages to each other? If they are basically the same it probably wouldn't
be to hard to convert the basic page layout to a custom template and then you could use the built in
ShopSite features. If each page is different it would be harder to do but still possible.

If you post the url to the store I'll take a look and see how much work it might be.

Re: Can we put Drop-down list onto product pages? (Shopsite

Postby A Stewart » Wed Nov 20, 2002 3:48 am

[Apologies for fresh post, but my outlook wont
let me add to the previous thread!]

Regarding putting a drop-down list into a
Custom Page...

The store is on this domain
http://www.shiptonandheneage.com

e.g. of product page:
http://www.shiptonandheneage.com/p-albe02.html

Yes the pages are all very similar to each other
at present. As you will see we are uploading a
certain amount HTML in order to get the colour
and boldening we wanted. Likewise, we are uploading
price "(+Tax)" manually in the same way.

My understanding from what Loren says is that we
*could* get the Sizes into these individual product
pages, but that there is no mechanism to get the
sizing to ripple out from ShopSite into these
Custom pages. Is this correct?

i.e. Am I right in thinking we can't get this
information to be database driven?
