Hide shipping total for store with only downloadable product

Hello Shopsite folks,

Our store only sells downloadable products. Yet there is a line item in the cart, billing and thank you pages that lists shipping. Is there a way to remove that entry altogether? We're worried that it will confuse customers, potentially causing them to abandon their carts.

In the product info, you can specify that the items are virtual or tangible. I believe that's how it knows.

Turn off all shipping options in the store (Commerce Setup > Shipping )and no shipping total will display in the shopping cart (at least in a Pro level store I didn't check manager and starter).
If you don't want both billing and shipping addresses on the checkout screen you can disable the shipping address fields under Commerce Setup > Order System > Checkout > by checking Ship only to Billing Address checkbox.

So we also have another store that sells both virtual and physical products. For this store we obviously can't just turn off the shipping options. Is it possible to turn off the shipping column in the checkout page, if there are no shippable products in the cart?

I assume you mean the shipping address fields? There is no way to turn them off specifically for downloadable products. There is an option on Commerce Setup > Order System > Checkout called "Shipping Address not displayed if there is no shipping service" which you could try checking and see if that removes the fields. You may have to make sure that the "No Shipping Charges:" checkbox is checked on the Products > Edit Product Info screen.

There is also an option to not display the fields at all, "Ship only to Billing Address", found on the same screen as above.
