How long are items saved in shopping cart?

We had a promotion a few months ago and I am - just now - seeing people purchase items using the old promotional prices. Since those prices have not been available anywhere since, the only explanation seems to be that people saved the promotional items in their carts and are only now checking out. Thus, my questions: 1) Is there a general limit on how long Shopsite lets users keep items in the shopping cart? 2) If yes, where do you adjust it in the Starter version? 3) If not, is some kind of time limit or cart purging etc. available in any of the paid versions of Shopsite?

The default is 7 days. In ShopSite Pro (possibly manager but I don't recall off-hand) you can change this time limit by going to Commerce Setup > Order System > Shopping Cart.

Thanks so much for the prompt response, Lauren. Default limit of 7 days would be perfect, but if the promotional pricing finished in June and has not been available nor accessible anywhere since, yet people are still checking out with it in Shopsite, then that means that somehow they managed to keep it in their carts since then, in spite of that default limit. I wonder how that's possible?

Would anyone know if deleting the promotional product from Shopsite completely (right now it's still listed in the Shopsite admin panel, though it's no longer available for customers on any product pages or through any links) help fix this? What would happen if I delete the promotional item from June completely and someone still has it in their shopping cart and wants to check out with it?

If it is still in your store, it could be that an entire page was cached by someone's browser, so they were still able to see the add to cart button for that product, and when they added it to the cart, ShopSite was still able to find it in your store so it was able to be added to the cart. Another option would be if the product were subbmitted through the Google Product Search Feed, or something like that. If you have sale items with sale prices that you don't want, I would suggest changing the price to a higher price in your store or removing the product so that if someone, for one reason or another, is able to add the product to the cart, they will either get a message saying the product is no longer available or showing the product at the current price.

Thanks so much - once again - for the quick answer, Lauren - I think you're right that it's somebody's cache or a Google search. Following your advice, I adjusted the price in the promotional product to regular price and indicated promotion is no longer valid. That should fix it! :)
