Gift Certificates as SKUs?

Hi Guys,

I am porting client's store to ShopSite and went across a little roadblock with functionality. In the original implementation the client is selling gift certificates as SKUs and then you can apply them to your future purchases.

In shopsite, I noticed, Gift certificate is deliverable by Email or Mail and seems like people can't buy it. How do I replicate the original functionality on SHopsite.

I'm not sure I understand the original setup. With the ShopSite Gift Certificate feature, the customer does buy the gift certificate, and ShopSite generates a unique number for each individual gift certificate. You can choose if you would like ShopSite to automatically email the customer the gift certificate when the gift certificate is purchased. Or if you mail gift certificates, you can choose mail, and you (or the merchant) can manually deliver the gift certificate to the customer after the order is completed.

I'm not sure what you mean by "people can't buy it" because all gift certificates in ShopSite need to be purchased (unless the merchant wants to manually create a gift certificate for someone). A customer fills out the information, such as amount, to, from, and then goes through the regular checkout process as if the gift certificate was a regular product.

Oh sorry, my fault for not understanding the ShopSite's gift certificates feature. So a gift certificate acts like a product and can be listed in it's own category as any product would, is that correct?

It isn't listed in categories, it has its own page (CGI page) which collects the needed information. What many merchants will do is include the gift certificate link in the navigation menu. So if you have an option in the navigation menu for "Gifts," gift certificates could be on that list.
