Smarthtml?

Can someone point me at an explanation of the smarthtml directory.

I thought it was a location for custom templates that override the stock ones that come with a theme but it does not seem to be working that way.

It's for an old deprecated feature that you shouldn't use called Custom Pages. This is NOT the same as Custom Templates. See:

Unless you have uploaded Custom Pages (and hopefully you never will!), the smarthtml directory will be empty. You can even delete it if you want to.

I have not done anything with custom pages just templates.
