AOL 8.0/No Cookies Shopsite Error

All,

No one seemed interested in taking a gander at my request, despite the
fact that more and more users will be using AOL 8 (AOL claims 6 million
people already do) and no doubt some of them will be blocking cookies.
Hence, their shopping cart will not add items.

The simple solution to this is a text message in the shopping cart to
the effect that "AOL users must enable cookies in order for the cart to
function properly."

However, since we already have lots of messages that our customers don't
read, I wanted something a bit more "attention-getting." So, I've been
working on a Javascript to detect AOL and detect cookies and pop up an
Alert message if the customer is using AOL 8.0 AND has cookies
disabled. I think I finally have it working the way I want.

Lexiconn tells me I can add it to the shopping cart under "Commerce

I tried your link and get nothing ( a blank white page) on my Mac IE 5.0 so
I am assuming I need to be using aol 8.0 to get the desired result. Correct?

That is why I have not tried to help with this issue yet. I too feel it is
vitally important to have ss work fluidly in aol 8.0 and yes you cannot get
people to "read" plain old messages.

Right....if you got a blank page using IE 5, then its working OK. The only time
you should see anything is if you have AOL 8.0 with cookies disabled. Then you
should get the alert.

If you want to see the actual script (of course), click on "View Page Source" in
the IE menus. I need to install it onto the shopping cart still.

ShopSite has been looking into this issue. It appears that if all cookies
are disabled AND the shopper is using an ISP that rotates (changes) the IP
they are coming from (as AOL does) then they could experience a problem
ordering. The more recent versions of AOL make it easier to intentionally
disable all cookies. However, the vast majority of users do not disable
cookies since most web services require cookies (e.g. Yahoo Mail, etc.)

A ShopSite v6.1.1 patch should be available shortly. The patches
availability will be posted to the newsgroup and to the Technical Bulletin
List Server:

Actually,

I came up with my own "patch" last week, toying around with Javascript to
pop-up an ALERT to the customer if they have AOL 8 AND have disabled
cookies. It appears to work as I hoped (the guys at Lexiconn even looked
and concur).

(I haven't gotten a chance to to add it to the shopping cart page yet, but
I can just add the script to the "Text at the Top of The Shopping Cart Page"
field in the Commerce Setup, according to Lexiconn.)
