AOL 8.0

Postby Chris » Sun Oct 27, 2002 2:49 pm

Hi,

I tested for myself now.

Using AOL 8.0, with cookies blocked, it won't add an item to the cart.
Unblock cookies and its fine.

Any solution other than to have all customers allow cookies? Can we add a
Javascript alert to the cart along the lines of "AOL 8.0 members must enable
cookies to place an order."?

Anyone have any solutions?

Re: AOL 8.0 Solution (Sort Of)

OK,

Here's the deal,

Working with Lexiconn, I've figured out this will happen when anyone with AOL 8
and cookies disabled tries to place an order. Its because the IP address
tracking Shopsite uses in lieu of cookies is thwarted by AOL's use of a
different IP on each page load.

The work-around (so far) is adding a Javascript to the shopping cart (in the
"text at the top of the shopping cart" field) to detect the turned off cookies
and pop up a message that "AOL 8 users must have cookies enabled." Currently, I
have 2 problems with this:

1) It pops up for ANYONE with cookies disabled, even IE and Netscape users for
whom it doesn't matter.

2) It pops up every time these people add an item to the cart.

So I need to know:

1) Can I have this message pop up ONLY the first time they go to the cart?

2) Can the Javascript detect AOL 8 users specifically and only pop up the
message for them--I know there is Javascript that can detect different
browsers--can it also detect AOL versions somehow? (NOTE: If I can do his,
questions 1 becomes irrelevant).

Can anyone help?

Re: More AOL 8

I think I've got a script to test for AOL 8.0, then and only then test for cookies.
(Currently its set to test for AOL 7, since that's what I can actually test on my
computer). It works fine in AOL (alert pops up with cookies disabled) and Netscape
(no alert with cookies disabled), but I'm still getting the pop-up alert with
Internet Explorer with cookies disabled, which tells me my if-then statement isn't
properly subordinated.

Can someone take a look and help?

You can now apply the patches referenced in this article:
http://support.shopsite.com/kbase/view_ ... onID=S5459

and that should solve the problem.
