How to charge tax on shipping for New York only?

I need to add sales tax to orders going to New York and Texas. In NY, shipping cost is supposed to be included in the tax calculation, but in Texas, it should not be included. How do I specify this?

I don't believe that it is possible to charge tax on shipping to one state and not another using the ShopSite Sales tax methods. There is just a checkbox to tax Shipping or not and the radio button to say if the tax on shipping is added to the Tax total or Shipping total.

The AvaTax option might have something that would allow charging or not charging tax on shipping but you would need to contact them for information.

You might also be able to write a API Tax Add-on that you could compute the tax on shipping or not depending on the destination.

I'm having the same trouble. For instance, Illinois has sales tax that must be added to just the merchandise, but Kansas, has to have sales tax added for BOTH shipping cost and merchandise.

Any other suggestions on how to go about solving this issue? Does ShopSite Pro have an option by state or another solution?

I have no clue what AvaTax is... is that something I should research?

I'm currently using ShopSite Manager 9.0.3.1, but would not mind upgrading to pro IF there was a solution to this problem.

Avatax is a firm that keeps track of tax laws in the different states. They provides a real time tax computation service (for a fee). The the products and address information in the order is sent to them and they determine the tax, based on what the products are and where it will be shipped. That tax is returned to the cart and displayed to the shopper almost instantaneously. I believe they also keep data to help you in filling out the required tax reports for each location where you need to collect taxes.
