Getting all image files onto my hard drive

Is there any way to "dump" all of the image files in my /media directory onto my hard-drive? I need to edit/rename them and, seeing as we have thousands, I'd like to just grab them all in one go (and worry about uploading later).

Probably the quickest way to grab images from the server and place them onto your computer would be to use FTP to bring a copy of the images down.
