Foreign Orders/Required Fields

Postby Chris » Thu Oct 24, 2002 11:20 am

While we're on the subject of form options that don't work for foreign
customers:

Some of our foreign customers have trouble ordering becasue "zip/postal
code" is a required field and some don't have anything to put there.

We've advised them to fill in 00000 or something like that, but is there
any way that the zip code will not be required when they change the
country to something other than US or Canada?

Not really, countries other than US or Canada have postal codes too (I am
pretty sure Australia and Great Britain do). Also, unless you are using UPS
shipping or the Custom Shipping Add-on, the country selection doesn't show
up until the checkout screen.

You can change the text next to the zip code field (Preferences -> Store
Text -> Shopping Cart), so perhaps adding something like "(enter 'none' or
'00000' if your country doesn't have postal codes)" to the text would help
if you accept international orders.

Hi Chris, hi Loren,

all countries you want to deliver to, have postal codes. UK (and other ALL
European countries) has/have them, and Australia as well by the way.

The only country w/o postal codes I am aware off, is Egypt. We have several
customers there (dive operations with European management). But we always
deliver to their EU offices and they take care of the transport themselves.

Even fraud orders have ZIP codes, look at the email we received this morning
:-)

I think the customer who specifically complained about not being able to order
because he didn't have a postal code was in Norway. Is that possible..or is he
just not recognizing what we're asking for?

Hi Chris,

Norway has postal codes (4-digit). If you ask for the "ZIP" code in your
form, most people from this side of the ocean don't know that it means
"postal code". Use the instructions provided by Loren to change your text to
"ZIP (postal code)" in your online form and also people from Europe should
be able to fill your forms :-)

Norway is Europe, but not part of the European Union by the way.

Regards,
Niko

We do use a field that reads "Zip Code/Postal Code" However, it reads "5-Digit
Zip Code/Postal Code" (in response to a previous suggestion from Loren to avoid
people entering their 9-digit Zip +4, which throws off the tax by zip code
calculation.)

Perhaps you should change it to something like Zip Code/Postal Code (U.S. shoppers,
only enter your 5-digit ZIP code, not the ZIP+4) or something like that. If this is
just an issue of wording, then that should be easy enough to resolve.
