Problems with SS 6.1.1 and AOL 8.0?

Postby Daves Discount Motors » Mon Oct 21, 2002 12:16 pm

Over the past 2 weeks, I have been receiving 2-3 calls per day from
customers who cannot complete orders. Here is the setup:
I run SS 6.1.1 on Solaris 5.6
Customers who cannot complete orders are ALL AOL 8.0 users.
When customer has filled shopping cart, entered all data, and clicks on
final 'SUBMIT THIS ORDER' button:
The next page shows up as 'this page cannot be displayed' (usually) and
sometimes 'you must specify a valid value for storeid'
If customer clicks refresh or retry, it takes them back to the checkout page
where they enter the billing information. They can then click on 'submit
this order' again, with the same results. they are stuck in a loop.
Problem has been documented on PCs running WIN 98, WIN2K, and WINXP, using
both internet explorer and netscape.

Shopsite, any known issues here? The christmas rush is beginning and we need
a fix desperately!

A "this page cannot be displayed" error message is a generic IE error message.
Usually there is a little more specific error message lower in the page,
something like 'DNS error' or 'server 500 error' or something like that. Getting
the more specific error from the browser might tell you why the browser thinks
it cannot display the page.

the "you must specify a valid value for storeid" error just means that someone
has tried to go directly to a ShopSite shopping cart cgi without providing a
storeid value. The storeid is POST'ed to thankyou.cgi by the previous cgi in the
process, billing.cgi, so the storeid is not in the URL. So if someone reloads
the thankyou.cgi screen when they get some other error (or if they bookmark the
thankyou.cgi screen and then later return to it directly) then they may get this
error. The shopper would not generally see this error unless they saw some other
error first and tried to just reload.

Hi,

You wrote: "Problem has been documented on PCs running WIN 98, WIN2K, and WINXP,

Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the problem was with AOL, then it wouldn't
affect an external Netscape or Internet Explorer browser window, just AOL's
internal browser.

This sounds similar to a problem we had with our "Quick Order" function on AOL.
As I recall, the solution had something to do with how AOL handles cookies and
the "Keep Unfinished Shopping Carts for ?? days" setting in Shopsite.

Oh, yes, I remember that, you had the 'days to keep unfinished carts' set to 0 in
the Commerce Setup -> Order System screen. This basically caused cookies to expire
immediately. IE and Netscape seemed to still be able to handle this OK, but the AOL
browser choked. That setting needs to be at least 1 day. May or may not be the same
problem.

Current setting is 'keep unfinished carts for 7 days'.

Still getting the error... any other help?

BTW, I tried ordering from your store with AOL 8.0 and it worked just
fine, so I doubt that there is an AOL-specific problem here. And as
Chris mentioned, if the shoppers are using Netscape and IE not the AOL
browser, then AOL shouldn't be a factor.

No, I cannot replicate the error myself. If I could, I would have some more
detailed information. As it stands, I get 2-3 calls from customers daily
with this error. Any news on the next version of ShopSite? Maybe the next
version will be free of this mysterious bug?

Loren,

You've upgraded to AOL 8? Any ill effects on your computer that you've noticed?

(I usually wait at least a month or 2 before downloading the newest version.--AOL
6.0 put my brand new computer in the shop with a re-format less than a week after I
bought it.)

I did a new install on a computer that isn't used much, so I don't know if there are
any ill affects on that machine, sorry.. I feel your pain with AOL, though, I have AOL
5.0 installed on a machine I use regularly, and any time I run it the CPU usage goes to
100% even when the program is supposedly idle. The dreaded BSOD seems to happen more
often after I installed it (v5) too.

I haven't had any problems running AOL 7.0 on my new XP machine at home (well, no more than
expected when running both Microsoft and AOL programs).

Anyone?
