Shopsite and CC Billing - Credit Card Funds Captured 4 times

Postby Keith Palmer » Mon Oct 14, 2002 7:14 am

We had a problem last nigth where apparently a lady tried to put in her Credit Card Info, and got
error messages 4 times in a row...

However, Shopsite still caputred funds from her CC... all 4 times... and maxed out her Credit Card.
Needless to say she was not a happy camper, and we had a heck of a time correcting it in calling the
bank and explaining what happened and everything.

Was just wondering if anyone else had had this problem / nkew what coul dhave caused it?

Thanks - Keith

What error messages did she get, and what payment gateway do you use?

Ah, we just reproduced the error...

We submitted an order with a Zip Code that was wrong, it bounced us back BUT it still reserved funds
from the credit card.

So it doesn't actually charge the card, and it doesn't actually place the order, BUT it does reserve
the funds on the persons credit card. It's not really a problem unless they submit it multiple times
and max out their card, and then get POed bout it.

That would most likely be a problem with Verisign not ShopSite. They should
not be holding funds if the transaction was declined. You might want to give
Verisign a call to see if they are having probelms with other accounds or if
it is a unique problem.

Well, actually it is not really a problem specifically with either.

VeriSign does not actually reject transactions based on a bad address
info, they just run the authorization transaction and then inform the
calling software (in this case, the ShopSite software) of the results,
including the AVS results. ShopSite can then reject the order, based on
your AVS settings in ShopSite. But, the authorization transaction is
already run on the VeriSign side.

Authorize.net is different in this respect, the AVS settings are on
their side, and because of this they can actually reject the transaction
on their end and then inform the calling program (ShopSite) of the
reason for the rejection.
