Can I require a login to enter shopsite?

Postby ccooley » Wed Oct 20, 2010 6:46 pm

Hi,

I have an issue where the distributor of the products in Shopsite requires all the potential buyers be prescreened as legitimate customers before given access to the store (mostly to protect their posted pricing from competitors). The main site is open to the public, and we use the Htaccess editor to password protect the /Store directory. Once they call in we give them a login and password for that and enter it into the htaccess data list. Then, of course, they also have the issue of Shopsite registration, which is different and they do themselves. The issue is that people are getting confused, and hate the dual logins. We are losing traffic, and gaining frustration. Has anyone else encountered this issue? Is there a better work around? Scripts? custom templates? I don't work enough with Shopsite to know where to go. We would love one login for everything and be done with it.

Thanks in advance!

If you are password protecting the directory for the store then just turn off the ShopSite registration process.

Thanks for your quick response, Jim.

Does that then lose the functionality of being able to see prior orders, prefill re-orders, etc. that registration gives you? I think I read somewhere that Shopsite sends a cookie that will remember some information, but I'm not sure what will (if anything) be lost if there simply is no registration.

Again, Thanks.

Are you giving each customer a unique username and password?

If so, the current version of Shopsite allows you to upload Customer Registration info. Perhaps you could use this so the Shopsite Registration log-in was at least the same as the password-protected directory log-in.

If you don't have ShopSite customer registration enabled shoppers won't be able to view past orders, save payment info, shipping addresses. ShopSite does not provide a re-order feature from a past order so that doesn't come in to play.

The address information will be kept in a cookie in the shoppers browser so if they return for another order (and have not cleared their cookies) the address fields will be prefilled.

Payment information is not kept in the cookie, however, so they would need to re-enter that information. (Note: if you are trying to be PCI compliant you shouldn't allow shoppers to keep their payment information even if you are using ShopSite customer registration.)
