Product XML - Deleting Products

We would like to use the Product XML to maintain products.

The ability to DELETE product via XML is not an option.
Lexiconn has informed me that I need to do it thru the Back Office (browser).

I suppose a field "Product Status" might be a way to set a product to "Unavailable", to serve the same purpose.
In fact, I think when you choose "Delete Product" from the browser, you don't really delete the product.

I took the product off of any pages, but it is still available in search.

If there is any workaround, please advise.

Set the "Search Destination" for these unavailable products to "None" and they will not appear in search results.
