affiliate program question

Postby Ben Ziegler » Thu Sep 19, 2002 1:24 pm

We have a potential affiliate who wants to know if Shopsite uses cookies to
determine when a customer visits our site from hers. Can anyone shed some
light on this?

Thanks,
Ben

When someone comes through a ShopSite associate link ShopSite creates a
shopping cart file for that person just as if they had clicked an add to cart
button, except there are no products in the cart and the cart is not displayed.
ShopSite then records the associate name in the cart file, and then redirects
the shopper to the landing page url for that associate.

The shopper is identified with their particular shopping cart via cookies, or
if they have cookies turned off, via IP tracking. The cookie is just a normal
ShopSite shopping cart cookie and doesn't have any kind of information that
identifies the associate, since that is stored in the shopping cart file
itself.

Hi Ben,

Shopsite's affiliate program is ok, but no features really in it. Except
the affiliate / webmaster gets an email after any order is placed
through there Unique URL.

We just got Ultimate Affiliate intergrated with Shopsite, and it's the
best damm aff. software out there I think, and only $200.00 We use it on
many non shopsite stores we run.

See it at: http://www.groundbreak.com

Affiliates love the real time stats, emails, etc, etc, etc, etc.

If you have shopsite pro, it can be intergrated within 10-30 minutes,
easily.

Thanks

Loren,
So if a customer comes to our site from our affiliate, and doesn't buy at
that time but then comes back later and orders.. as long as they don't clear
their cookies (like I do every few days) or come to our site from a
different ip address, then the affiliate will still get the sale most
likely?

Just trying to make sure we tell the potential affiliate the correct info :)

Thanks,
Ben

Unfortunately in ShopSite v5 which you are using, the cookie that identifies the
shopper with the cart is session-based, i.e. as soon as they close all their
browser windows or shutdown the computer the cookie goes away. In ShopSite v6
(not yet released for Win2000 yet) you can select how many days the cookie
lasts. The default is 7 days, you can set it as high as 90, I think.

In your current v5 version, if the shopper has cookies turned off, their
IP-based basket will hang around for 7 days, so as long as they have the same IP
they will be connected to the Associate for those 7 days.
