I'm looking for a new host now (unix) and I've researched alternatives based
on previous communication here in the newsgroup.

Something that hasn't really been mentioned here is a host that can offer a
type of "semi-dedicated" solution where my site would not share a physical
server with more than 30-40 other clients. The companies I've seen
mentioned here and at Shopsite.com all offer shared hosting which in my view
seems to be geared for relatively low-traffic sites, because when I ask how
many clients share a server it's usually 200+.

I'm not quite ready to get a dedicated server. I would really appreciate
comments on whether or not a Shopsite store with daily traffic of 600-1000
unique visitors and 20,000 hits per day should be ok on a server with 200
others (am I being too cautious?), or if there is a competent host somewhere
that can offer a plan with fewer clients per server.

My current host has me on a machine with 80 clients per server and an
advanced plan with 8 clients per machine, but their support of Shopsite is
not good and I need to move.

my mail server. It costs $295 per month and I have way more traffic than
the numbers you mentioned and I have no problems. Tech service is 24/7 and
pretty good. If your needs change, they will upgrade also. I also have
them do a total backup daily for $250 per month. I am running 2 sites with

Go for hassle free ShopSite Hosting. I have one ShopSite store there for a
client and they do almost *anything* for me. Jason is a good man!

Plus, their Miva support is good too. I have 12 Miva Merchant clients there
and haven't had to contact them once . . . except for one . . . because the
client can be kinda lame . . . heh . . . ;(

I, too, am very pleased with Lexiconn. I moved there after experiencing
EXTREME cgi lags with my previous host. Since moving to Lexiconn, our sales
are back up, due to the speed at which our customers are able to browse our
site.

Also, the guys over at Lexiconn have been very helpful and have even
troubleshooted external cgi programs for me, which were not their
responsibility.

I do understand that they have roughly 200 sites/server, but honestly, I
have not experience any downtime or slow navigation - quite the opposite.

get most of your traffic.


Are you getting most of your traffic from:
Search engines.
Links.
Printed ads.
Retail store customers.
You don't have an affiliate program, so thats out.

For tracking I use the UOL tolls from UPS. The code is simple, you can copy
mine if you like. There are hidden values that the customer doesn't see and
the one that would effect you is shipper number. If you have worked with
tables and forms before, this is a snap. UPS would also help you if you
like.

Thanks so much! I have written a new tracking page with both Fedex and UPS
tracking available. I can't believe this was available this whole time - I
just didn't know what to look for. I've instructed my shipping manager to
enter the order number in the Reference area, so I'll put the new page up in
about a week, after we get some order numbers on reference.

I just may buy those shoes - have to see if my budget has some room;-)

Are you also aware that UPS will send an Ship Notification email (or fax) to
the customer letting them know the shipment is on its way with the tracking
number? This is all automated in World Ship when using Stone Edge Order
Manager. All the shipping information the customer has included in the
order plus any other information needed like the Reference Number or Order
Number is imported from OM to UPS with the Keyed Import function with a
click--no more typing addresses and all that other time consuming info.

alternatives
based
on previous communication here in the newsgroup.

Something that hasn't really been mentioned here is a host that
can
offer a
type of "semi-dedicated" solution where my site would not share
a
physical
server with more than 30-40 other clients. The companies I've
seen
mentioned here and at Shopsite.com all offer shared hosting
which
in
my
view
seems to be geared for relatively low-traffic sites, because
when
I
ask
how
many clients share a server it's usually 200+.

I'm not quite ready to get a dedicated server. I would really
appreciate
comments on whether or not a Shopsite store with daily traffic
of
600-1000
unique visitors and 20,000 hits per day should be ok on a server
with
200
others (am I being too cautious?), or if there is a competent
host
somewhere
that can offer a plan with fewer clients per server.

My current host has me on a machine with 80 clients per server
and
an
advanced plan with 8 clients per machine, but their support of
Shopsite
is
not good and I need to move.
