combining products in an order

If I add Product A to my cart... all works well. If I continue shopping and add other products, it all works. If I go back and add Product A a second time, it still adds to my cart, except it adds a second instance of the product in the cart as opposed to it adding 1 unit of quantity to the instance that already exists.

Any suggestions?

This is operating as designed. The items in the cart will not be added together to a single line item if they are added multiple times.
