Custom Pages

Postby Paul Perris » Sat Aug 17, 2002 11:16 am

Hello All,

I was today looking round some of the advanced shopsite features and the
above features looks interesting, does this allow much more control over the
look and feel of you page layout?

At present we struggle to use html in the text box 1,2 and 3 but found this
sometimes to lack flexability to get complete control over the layout of our
pages.

Is this feature worth time investing ?

Anybody give me some examples were they have used this feature?

Thanks,

Paul

Paul,

Custom pages are great in that you have complete control over the layout
of the page and just put ShopSite information where you need it. There
is a draw back though, Each custom page must be individually created
and the specific products assigned on a page by page basis in the html
for that page. So if you have 10 pages in your store you need to
manually create 10 custom pages.

If your store just has a few pages this wouldn't be a bad way to go,
however, if your store has lots of pages that all will have a similar
look you would be better investing the time in creating custom
templates. With a custom template you create the look for a single
page in each template but that template can be used on many pages just
like the built in ShopSite templates.

I know there are a number of stores that have created custom templates
and have great looking sites. chinasprout.com and switchhits.com are a
couple that I can think of right off hand. They use both custom page
and product templates.

Sample code for a couple of templates is available in the help at
http://www.shopsite.com/help/6.1/en-US/ ... intro.html

Question...are there any designers out there that can work with an existing
site and create a custom template page that I can use. I've designed the
site (shh...no laughing please) with FP and OrderAnywhere. I have it just
the way I want it but now two vendors have announced price increases which
mean more changes for me using Order Anywhere. Please feel free to check out
my site and let me know a price on how much it would cost. I can do all the
upkeep myself, just don't have time nor patience right now. Thank you!!

I own Creative Drive, a web development firm and e-commerce solutions
company. Our website is at http://www.creativedrive.net

I also own and manage www.2BigFeet.com, an online retailer of large shoes
running on ShopSite 6. We use custom page and product templates, affiliate
links, shipping integration and a few other features we've done from
scratch. Take a look.

I'd be happy to help you with your site. If you've already got the site
designed, converting the site to make page templates isn't difficult at all.
If you would like more information my contact information is as follows:
