Google Webmaster tools workaround

Postby gkrehbiel » Wed Dec 02, 2009 7:51 am

For what it's worth, here's a small workaround I discovered today.

It seems that Shopsite and Google Webmaster Tools are out of synch.

The Google Sitemap wizard in Shopsite only wants me to verify my site with Google using the html upload method. But that method doesn't seem to exist in the Google Webmaster tools menu. It wants me to add a meta tag to the header of my home page.

I did that easily enough by editing my template.

But when I wanted to add a sitemap, the Shopsite wizard still insisted that I use the html upload feature.

I simply gave the wizard a silly file name, clicked next, and went on to the sitemap section.

Google Webmaster Tools does still have the HTML File verification method (I've used it very recently), but perhaps if you have verified this site previously via the Meta Tag method it may be difficult to find the option in Google Webmaster Tools to re-verify the site using a different method (if the site is already verified, though, you don't really need to verify it again).

You can also use the Meta Tag verification method without creating a custom template by adding it to the Meta Description field for your main page in ShopSite, as shown in the following ShopSite Knowledgebase article:
