Help finding good host? Unix vs Windows

[HealthDesign]

We are currently on a Windows NT server and having many problems with our
current host. I have looked at Lexiconn and they are Unix based. I also use
Frontpage to publish my site. The folks at Lexiconn say I may have problems
publishing my site through Frontpage that I should FTP. According to
Microsoft, you should not FTP a Frontpage site, only publish. If it makes a
difference, I use a frontpage page theme and the frontpage search.

So besides Lexiconn, can anyone recommend a good Windows NT host? I'm a
novice to this so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I agree with Lexiconn on the NT/Linux comparison. We are
Hosting/Design firm that would be happy to talk with you about our hosting
capabilities for your company. We only run shopsite on the linux platform
for stability and the maintenance factor. You will be much better off in
the long run by getting a copy of Macromedia Dreamweaver for your html work
and using shopsite on the Linux platform. It is cheaper per month and not
near the hastle and downtime. We have many shopsite stores running on our
servers and would be glad to supply you references about our service and
support.....

Hi Marge,

We host with Lexiconn and I can tell you, the site is fast and stable. The
staff there is very responsive and knowledgeable, as well. It's actually
pretty easy to save pages from Front Page and upload them via FTP. There's
a great little FTP program out there called WS_FTP - you can get it in the
download section at builder.com. All you need to do is save your file as
html and upload it into the main directory. Unless you are using Front Page
extensions (certain forms, scripts, that are built by Front Page and need
server instructions to run), this should not be a problem. I would also
suggest that when using shopsite, you try to build as many pages within the
program as possible by writing them in an outside editor, such as Front
Page, and cutting and pasting the code into text1, text2, etc. This makes
managing your site a lot easier.

Thank you but I am using the FrontPage Extensions and Lexiconn does seem
like a great host but I was hoping to find a great Windows NT host. Can
anyone recommend one?

I almost responded to your question when you first posted it except I don't
know the difference between an NT or Unix server. Anyway, my suggestion as
a merchant to you as a novice would be to invest in some experts out there
or you may be pennywise and pound foolish. I believe in the small guy with
plenty of personal service. Brent at www.sd360.com designed my site and I
love it and he knows ShopSite. My host is www.basiclink.com where you
always get speedy service from the same two guys.

Also, the key to running my business smoothly and efficiently is the use of
Order Manager and Product Manager from www.stoneedge.com . I can't say
enough good things how this add-on to Shop Site has increased the
effectiveness of my site and office with respect to handling orders and
inventory -- it's a must if you're selling products. And Barney Stone is a
gem.

As far as I've been told, FrontPage is for novices--if you always want to be
a novice, I guess it could work. If you want a professional site, the
suggestion you already got of Dreamweaver is the way to go -- so I've been
told.

Make the investment now -- it will pay off in the long run. This is my 3rd
generation site and I've learned a bit from my mistakes. I now feel I have
the winning combination of products and people to help me be successful.

I know this isn't the answer you are looking for, but I recommend you move
to a Linux based server for security purposes if you accept credit cards or
store sensitive data on your server. I use Windows 2000 Professional on my
PC, but would not use it on a server.

My site was originally written with Front Page, but I had to make major HTML
changes as Front Page as it does not allow Netscape users to properly see
your pages. I lost a lot of business before a customer finally clued me in
on what was happening. How lucky am I that a customer had the patience and
time to help me figure out why Netscape users could not use my ShopSite
catalog?

You do have a problem with your server. If the server is configured
correctly, you will do just fine. It is a continuous up hill battle, with
one thing or another.

One of all our ShopSite hosting customers is running on Windows 2000 and
doing fine. They burned through a few hosts before finding us.

They are real troopers. I do not suggest running a windows server that hosts
ShopSite with another programs on it.

You need a solid knowledgeable host.
