Tax and 9-Digit Zip Codes

Postby Chris » Mon Aug 05, 2002 8:28 am

Hi,

We have the "tax by zip code" set up on SS 6.1. It should be charging
6% sales tax to anyone in PA, based on the zip code range pre-set in the
Shopsite backoffice. Most come through fine, but a couple have come
through with no tax. It appears to be on orders where a 9 digit zip +4
was given.

Anyone else have this problem or know a solution?

OK, I might have it.....

In the Shopsite BackOffice, the zip codes to apply a tax to are listed as
15???, 16???, etc.

If I change those to read, 15???-????, 16???-????, etc., will it fix it?

Chris,

Your solution will not work to match the zip+4's because of the -. What will
work for the zip+4 is
50????????, where the - is also represented by a ?. However, if you simply
change 50??? to
50????????, then 50123 will NOT match anymore. So in the current release, if
you want to match both
5 digit zips and zip+4 then you will need to double up and have both 50??? AND
50???????? in the
list of zips to match.

A much easier way to handle this, especially if you have a lot of zips to
which tax applies and that would have to
have additional matching strings made for, would just be to add text to the
Preferences -> Store Text -> Shopping Cart setting for "Zip/Postal Code" to
say something like "<font color=red>5-digit</font> Zip/Postal Code". The would
probably keep most shoppers from entering the zip+4.
